Today I tried to play a game where you race across the room to find the correct letter. We cut out each letter and put them in order on a mat. Then I was on the couch and would ask him to run and get the
I do think that with the numbers, he might be bored with just counting, but I am not sure because he has never really shown me that he has mastered the skill. He is kind of of 50/50 on answering number questions correctly.
Before I leave you thinking that my son is way behind on everything, I will do a little bragging to bring him back up! I feel this is necessary because I am feeling down and I don't think he is dumb; he is just interested in other things.
Luke is a fabulous artist and works with his hands really well. He colors pretty close to in the lines, he draws people, shapes (can name the shapes too) and other creative pictures. He loves to paint and knows a lot about colors, can name all the basic colors and even knows a little about mixing colors. He has learned how to cut things out and is pretty good at that. He likes to cut and paste and does it without making a huge mess. He is also good with play dough and other crafts. He is good at organizing things and separating things. He is very good at imaginative play. He loves building houses out of anything (blocks, boxes, toys, chairs, pillows, blankets, etc) and pretending there's a fox/wolf/bear/lion/river outside and we have to get inside.
I know his little brain is working and he is learning every day. I am proud of Luke in every way possible and I don't want it to seem that I am not. He is awesome.
But I would like some advice on how to motivate him to learn his letters and numbers. I could also use advice on how to potty train him at night, while your giving advice. We've been struggling with that for a long time as well!
Thanks in advance for any advice you might have for me!!

Emily... He is not behind!! Claire is just starting to recognize her letters. She doesn't know the sounds at all. Usually they learn the sounds and letters at preschool age which is 3,4,5 years old. When they want to learn it, they will. It comes very quickly when their brains are ready. Just having exposure is good. A lot of kids in kindergarten didn't know there letters well, if that makes you feel any better. In fact- most of the kids in Claires preschool class do not recognize most of the letters, and do not know the sounds. There are a LOT of letters to learn!! Start with 5 or 6, and practice just those for a few months. When he knows them, put them away, and then get out 6 more. As for counting... It's the same, one day they just do it. I don't think you need to worry ;)
Ummmm, am I missing something? Luke is not even 3-1/2 yet! He's 3-1/4! Dad says if he gets to 6 and doesn't know his numbers and letters then perhaps you should be concerned. He's three. THREE!!!! We used to learn that stuff in kindergarten and then in pre-school and now for some reason it seems they're supposed to know it when they come out of the womb. Did I say he's THREE?
Remember Francisco's video? Let him be little. He's fine. Just keep showing him his numbers and letters and he'll get it when he's ready. He is very smart and not at all behind. Do. Not. Worry. About. It. Sarah is right.
BTW, I love you. I am smiling as I write this even if I sound like I'm not.
What you should worry about is the fact that he's going to be one little heartbreaker. Goodness sakes, that boy is handsome!
hahahaha, I totally agree with you all. He is in fact the smartest kid I know. Emily thinks Luke doesn't understand me when I speak Spanish to him, but the only one who doesn't understand me is Emily! LOL (only sometimes)
Luke is smart and he is so creative. Emily you are doing such a great job raising our kids... I mean who can color inside the lines at 3 and use scissor comfortably. What kid knows that if you mix blue and yellow you make green (I didn't till recently ;)) You have really brought out Luke's creative side. I love you and don't worry about it.
And for sure he will be a hear-breaker, especially since he has your genes!
Love you.
Sounds like he's on target!

Emily, I taught preschool for 27 years..You are doing GREAT! If you ever want any ideas for 3 year old stuff, just ask! Our 3 year old classroom focused on colors and shapes and introduced letters and numbers just a little. But from I have seen, you are an awesome Mom!
